Addie Street Renovation: “Before”

December 3, 2014

This home was constructed in 1988 as a six-bed residence, with the idea that a split-level duplex design would create a smaller, home-like environment for the people living there. At that time the average age of the people living at Addie Street was 36 years old; today there are eight people living there and the average age is 60 years old. The split-level duplex design, as well as the age of the building, is no longer feasible as we need to create an accessible, barrier free living environment as well as upgrade our fire code requirements.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Numerous stairs, small rooms and lack of personal space was not meeting the physical or emotional needs of the people that live in the home.  As people age, this structural design will challenge people physically to the point that they will no longer be able to live in the building. This renovation will ensure that people’s physical needs are being met and that they can continue to live in their home for as long as they wish. Jo-Anne Demick
