georgeGeorge may not use words to communicate but he sure knows how to hoe a garden and get a row straight. Shawanaga First Nation, just north of Parry Sound  asked for help to get their community garden started in order to get fresh produce growing for people in their community.  Parry Sound has 6 local community gardens and Rick Harrington of CLPS is a leader in that project. Rick asked George if he would like to lend a hand out at Shawanaga and George jumped at the chance. Through the process of preparing, planting and harvesting George, a senior citizen with limited verbal communication skills, met and befriended two people from the first nation community who genuinely enjoy his skill and presence.  George  attended a Pow Wow enjoying some social time with his fellow gardeners and hopes to continue to visit friends at Shawanaga by delivering fresh farm eggs to them and perhaps helping out in their community kitchen.george-at-shawnaga
